Explained
Tank cycling is the biological foundation of every aquarium. Without it, even small amounts of waste can be lethal. Cycling is not optional.
The Nitrogen Cycle
- Fish and food create waste (ammonia)
- Ammonia is toxic
- Beneficial bacteria convert ammonia → nitrite
- Nitrite is also toxic
- Another group of bacteria converts nitrite → nitrate
- Nitrate is removed via water changes and plant uptake

Fishless Cycling — The Controlled Method
Fishless cycling establishes beneficial bacteria before any livestock is added. It is the most stable and predictable approach and is strongly recommended for beginners.
Step by Step
- Set up the full system — tank, heater, filter, substrate, décor
- Fill with dechlorinated water at stable temperature
- Keep the filter running continuously
- Introduce a controlled ammonia source (pure ammonia or fish food)
- Test regularly — ammonia, nitrite, nitrate
Stages You Will See
Ammonia Spike
Ammonia rises. Bacteria not yet established. Can last days to weeks.
Nitrite Spike
Ammonia drops. Nitrite rises. First bacterial colony working, second developing.
Nitrate Appears
Ammonia = 0. Nitrite = 0. Nitrate measurable. Cycle functionally complete.
Fish-In Cycling — Higher Risk
Fish-in cycling establishes bacteria while fish are present. It can be done safely, but requires discipline, testing, and reduced expectations. Best reserved for experienced keepers or when fish are already present.
- Start with minimal, hardy stock only
- Feed sparingly — uneaten food increases risk
- Test daily or near-daily initially
- Use water changes to reduce toxins, not replace bacteria
- Avoid deep filter cleaning
